*If the last letter is -а, we normally change it to -ы in Genitive.

If the last letter is -я, we change it to -и in Genitive.

We change last -а to -и after к, г, х, ч, щ, ж, ш.

If the last letter is -а or -я, a gender of a noun doesn’t matter

(feminine and masculine nouns change the same way).

\\\\\\\

**If the last letter is a consonant, we add -а in Genitive.

Й is a consonant; й+а is spelled я.

If the last letter is -ь and the noun is masculine (!), we change -ь to -я in Genitive.
