PRONOUNS IN TYPICAL PHRASES OF GREETING & GETTING ACQUAINTED

What is the right way to say?
\\\\\\\

Я РАД … ВИДЕТЬ.
КАК ... ЗОВУТ?
КАК … ДЕЛА?
  1. ВЫ
  2. ВАС

\\\\\\\

Я рад вас видеть.

Как ваши дела?

________________________________________

\\\\\\\

When we say “Как зовут”-phrase, we use personal pronouns in a specific grammar form, not a dictionary one (№4, Accusative):

\\\\\\\

Я => МЕНЯ зовут

ТЫ => ТЕБЯ зовут

ОН => ЕГО [йиво] зовут

ОНА => ЕЁ зовут

МЫ => НАС зовут

ВЫ => ВАС зовут

ОНИ => ИХ зовут

\\\\\\\

The verb “видеть” (as well as all the “normal” Russian verbs i.e. not exeptions and verbs without “-ся” in the end) requires an Object in a specific grammar form – form №4, Accusative:

\\\\\\\

ТЫ => ТЕБЯ видеть

ВЫ => ВАС видеть

\\\\\\\

Я рад(а) тебя видеть.

Я рад(а) вас видеть.

\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\

The question “Как твои дела?” means “How are you?”, but it’s not a literal translation. Literally it’s “How are your businesses?” because the Russian word “дела” means “business” in plural. That’s why the pronoun we use here is not personal (“ты/ вы”) but possessive plural (“твой / ваш” – pl. “твои / ваши”):

\\\\\\\

Как твои дела?

Как ваши дела?

If it’s a sentence with “приятно” (“очень приятно” – a typical phrase for getting acquainted, like “nice to meet you” in English, but it’s literal translation is “very pleasant to me”), we say the Subject in a specific grammar form, not a dictionary one (№3, Dative):

VERB  <= NOUN №1
\\\\\\\

When we need to decide about the form of a verb, we have to check the noun or personal pronoun in Nominative case (form №1) regardless its meaning.

\\\\\\\

Thus, in the first sentence the noun in case №1 (Nominative) is “деньги”, они (plural). Therefore we use the verb in plural: “были”, even though the Subject is feminine (Таня).

\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\

NO NOUN №1 => VERB TAKES “ОНО”-FORM

\\\\\\\

In the second sentence a noun in №1 (Nominative case) is absent. The both nouns “Таня” and “деньги” are in form №2 (Genitive: у Тани, денег). When we need to decide about the form of a verb, we can’t check a noun in any form but Nominative case (form №1). When we have nothing to check with, by default we use a verb in оно-form: “было”.

When we need to decide about the form of a verb, we have to check the noun in Nominative case (form №1).

Thus, in the question the noun №1 is “число”, оно (neuter). Therefore we use the verb in neuter: “было”.

\\\\\\\

In the answer the noun №1 is absent, but it’s implied. The whole structure of the sentence is made such a way as if there were the noun “число” (№1, оно) in it. Therefore we use the verb in neuter: “было”.

ATTENTION: “вчера” is not a noun at all. It’s an adverb and it’s neither feminine nor masculine nor neuter and never influences the form of a verb.

“Кто” grammatically is “он” (singular masculine). Therefore questions with “кто” require a verb in singular masculine (“он”-form): был, REGARDLESS the answer.

The form of a verb in an answer shouldn’t necessarily be the same as its form in a question. Thus, in this dialog the answer is “ребята” (“они”), and the verb takes “они”-form (the plural form): были.

\\\\\\\

“Что” grammatically is “оно” (singular neuter). Therefore questions with “что” require a verb in singular neuter (“оно”-form): было, REGARDLESS the answer.

For example, here the answer is “презентация” (“она”), and we use the verb in “она”-form (singular feminine): была.

\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\ (“он”

“Кто” grammatically is “он” (singular masculine). Therefore questions with “кто” require a verb in singular masculine (“он”-form): был, REGARDLESS the answer.

The form of a verb in an answer shouldn’t necessarily be the same as its form in a question.

“Все” grammatically is “они” (plural), so, it requires a verb in the plural form (“они”-form): были.

“Вы” requires a verb in plural (“были”) even when we address to a single person.

The form of a verb in an answer shouldn’t necessarily be the same as its form in a question.

For instance, in this example Anna answers about herself, she is a woman, so, she has to use a verb in singular female (“не была”).

The question “Кто это?” is very wide and doesn’t require any special information about the person. So, “Кто это? – Это мой брат (Who is that? – That is my brother)” is a possible conversation. The question “Кто он?” doesn’t work for “Это мой брат” because this question normally requires  information about person’s profession or occupation. The variant “Антон” doesn’t work to complete the question because when we use names after “кто” we add a “blank” word “такой/ такая/ такие”: “Кто такой Антон?”

If there is no Nominative case (падеж №1) in the phrase, we say the verb in “оно-form” (i.e. neuter /3 person singular)

For instance in the negative variant of the very special Russian model denoting possession “у кого (№2) нет чего (№2)”, both Subject and Object of possession take the form of Genitive case (падеж №2). But in Russian we check a verb only against the noun (pronoun) in the Nominative case (№1). \\\\\\\

When we speak about time (когда … ? – when … ?), the form of a noun depends on its meaning. If it’s a date (число), we use Genitive case (падеж 2) without preposition.

\\\\\\\

1. The noun “число” (date) itself is absent in the phrase but it is implied.
2. We use adjective “первый” and not the numeral “один” because we indicate what (какой) date it is and not how many (сколько) dates.
3. The adjective “первый” takes the form of Genitive case neuter (падеж 2, оно), because it qualifies the implied noun “число” (оно, date). Genitive neuter of “первый” is “первого”.
4. The word “март” is used in Genetive case (падеж 2) because noun+noun combination requires the “падеж 2″ form of the second noun. Genitive of “март” is “марта”.
